If you are an internet marketer, you would no doubt have heard of ‘keyword density’, but how many really understand the concept of keyword density and how it works. Let me tell you what it is and how to optimize yours correctly.

The first thing you would need to understand is what a keyword is. A keyword can be a word or a phrase that tells the reader what your site is all about. For example, if you had a site about Golf and Golf tips. Your keywords may be Golf, Golf tips, Golf etiquette, Golf balls, Golf shoes, etc. Whatever you write about Golf, you would want to have a keyword for that. Why would you want to do that? Because search engine rankings are based on the relevancy of the keywords used in relation to your site.

Like I said before, if your site is talking about Golf, the search engines would want you to use words relating to Golf and they will in fact look for those keywords. These keywords should definitely appear in two places, the first place being your keyword meta tag. Although, this has nothing to do with density, it is essential. Meta tag is the place where you would be giving all your keywords, separating each keyword with a comma. The other place where your keywords should be is on your site, and this is where the density factor comes in. These keywords should be incorporated into all the articles that are on your site.

Keyword density is determined by the number of times those keywords appear on each page of your website. People go wrong here. Most of them think that they can just stuff their page with keywords and repeat them even when not required, and your page will go up in the search engine rankings. Unfortunately, there is no truth in this. It just doesn’t work that way.

The search engines are not dumb and these days they are smarter than ever before. Now, they look for these keywords stuffed pages and if they find yours to be stuffed, your site will be banned.

People have different opinions on the percentage of keyword density. There are some people who feel 10% is fine, whereas some agree with 5%. I somehow am not comfortable with either.

I would like to make a suggestion, write on the topic and stick to the topic you are talking about, and be natural. I find that my keyword density is the best when I am natural. If we write an article keeping the search engines in mind, we will not be giving a good product that real people would like to read. Trust me, if you are natural and write on the topic of your web page and make sure there is enough information to satisfy your readers, your keywords will certainly appear quite a few times and your site will move up the search engines.

Using our common sense and writing sensible articles gives the best keyword density possible.
